How to Setup Boxee VPN

by Valer in How to | 0 Comments

Boxee is a popular freeware program and HTPC that works across multiple platforms. Though it was originally offered as freeware software, it now includes a media player that looks, appropriately, like a box. This home theater-ready computer includes software and hardware that are capable of supporting social networking sites as well as media sharing. Boxee users can view, rate and recommend content to others. One of the most exciting aspects of Boxee is that it recently announced technology for streaming like TV on its network. Boxee is also supported across multiple OS’s like Windows, Mac, Linux and even Apple TV.

While Boxee is still relatively new, this social media theater purchase is already making waves. However, this device like any Internet-connected computer is at great risk, especially if you use WI-FI, 3G or public Internet access. The VPN services can protect you from security breaches through encryption methods, while IP cloaking can keep all of your web activity away from prying eyes.

Here are 10 steps on how to setup Boxee VPN. First, understand that it operates via PPTP or Point-to-Point Tunneling Protocol (PPTP), which is built into the system.

Step 1. Connect your Boxee box to the TV.

Step 2. Wait for the home screen to load and be displayed.

Step 3. Open the navigation menu. (You can access them through the “Options” button using the remote control)

Step 4. Use the up arrow on the remote to select the right icon option. You are looking for an icon that resembles a “cog”, or a small gear-like object.

Step 5. Select the network icon. (You can do this using the right arrow on the remote piece.) Click OK.

Step 6. Press the down arrow and highlight the option that clearly reads VPN.

Step 7. The connection type should be set to PPTP. Make any adjustments necessary.

Step 8. Make sure the server has the proper IP address. (You can find this information in the email you received from the company)

Step 9. Make sure the account information and password in the field matches the one you have from the company email.

Step 10. Check “encryption required” and see if the connection works. If it does not, then you can try un-checking it to see if it makes a difference.

If these steps do not work then be sure to contact the company for additional customer support. If you have Boxee, be sure to protect your connection!
